Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

It Happened Today in New York City

On February 17, 1933, Newsweek magazine began publication under the direction of Thomas J.C. Martyn. Though not an experienced journalist, Martyn had become invaluable to Time magazine because of his political knowledge and proficiency with languages. After resigning from the magazine he started his own and Newsweek would eventually become an eminent and recognizable publication. But the success was not immediate and Martyn sold his shares at a loss in 1937. The magazine would eventually cease printing and become a solely digital publication in 2012.
