It Happened Today in New York City
On July 10, 1902, the Interborough Rapid Transit Co. was founded by August Belmont II. The signed agreement obligated the company to maintain and operate the railroad for 50 years, with an option to renew the lease for an additional 25. Over a century later, the IRT is part of the largest (and 7th busiest) rapid transit system in the world, with 472 operating stations.
