Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

The Top 100 Greatest NYC Buildings — #55

Ukrainian Institute

Architect: C.P.H. Gilbert
Style: French Revival
Use: Museum
Opened: 1898
Borough: Manhattan

Built in a style more traditional for churches than homes, this cultural institution began as a mansion for banker Isaac Fletcher and later for oil tycoon Harry Sinclair. Initially described by architectural critics as architecturally “inappropriate” for a New York City house at the time, Gilbert’s grand manse has since been acknowledged by some as the most beautiful of the converted mansions on Fifth Avenue. Belonging to the Ukrainian Institute of America since 1955, it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
