Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

Happy 100th Birthday to the late, great Lena Horne! Born in Brooklyn, Horne joined the chorus line at the Cotton Club when still a teenager and toured with Noble Sissle before moving to Hollywood. After appearing in such classics as Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather, she came back to the Big Apple nightclubs during the blacklist. In 1958, she appeared in Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg’s musical Jamaica on Broadway and became the first black woman ever nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress. By the time of her death at age 92, she had won four Grammy Awards, a special Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, the New York Drama Critics Award, the NAACP Image Award, and a Kennedy Center Honor for extraordinary talent, creativity, and perseverance.
