It Happened Today in New York City

On June 3, 1967, Flushing-Meadows-Corona Park – formerly just “Flushing Meadows” – was rededicated with its new hyphenated name. Essentially a political gesture, the new dedication was an effort by the City Council to raise the image of the Queens neighborhood of Corona, which was most popularly associated with the garbage dump that shared its name rather than the adjacent park where the World’s Fair had just taken place.
