It Happened Today in New York City
On May 28, 1917, Benny “the Ghetto Wizard” Leonard won the Lightweight Championship of the World by TKO against Freddie Welsh in their rubber match at Manhattan Casino. Knocking Welsh down three times, Leonard avenged his loss from the previous July in Brooklyn which, in turn, had followed his defeat of Welsh at Madison Square Garden the previous March. Leonard held the belt until his retirement in 1924 and, to this day, holds the record for the longest reigning lightweight champion in history.
