It Happened Today in New York City
On May 14, 1967, Mother’s Day, Mickey Mantle hit his 500th home run in a 17-year career entirely with the New York Yankees. The game-winning run came in the bottom of the 7th inning against pitcher Stu Miller of the Baltimore Orioles. With this achievement, Mantle became the 6th Major League Baseball player in history to hit 500 career home runs. Today, there are 27 members of the “500 Home Run Club”, of whom the other New York players are Mel Ott of the Giants, Gary Sheffield of the Mets, and Babe Ruth and Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees.
