The Top 100 Greatest NYC Buildings — #68
90 West Street
In any list of New York’s architectural masterpieces, one should expect to see Cass Gilbert’s name fairly frequently. This is our first Gilbert building but won’t be our last. His classical detailing and heavy use of terra cotta helped to fireproof the building and preserve it against collapse on 9/11, though its copper roof had to be replaced after initial damage. The new roof has yet to turn that distinctive shade of green that dots the city’s skyline. Now converted into apartments, this former office building was designated a New York City Landmark in 1998.
