The Top 100 Greatest NYC Buildings — #70

The Helmsley Building

Architect: Warren & Wetmore
Style: French Revival
Use: Offices
Opened: 1929
Borough: Manhattan

Once called the New York Central Building, this crown jewel of Park Avenue is a comparative rarity: a French Revival design in skyscraper form. Designed by the same firm responsible for Grand Central Terminal – over which it towers – the Helmsley Building’s tenants have included Encyclopedia Britannica, Cornell University, Six Flags, and the notorious gangster Salvatore Maranzano (who was murdered in his office here, two years after the building opened). Its distinctive roof can be seen in the movies A.I. Artificial Intelligence and The Dark Knight.
