On April 28, 1967, the South Street Seaport Museum was chartered. The brainchild of Peter and Norma Stanford, the outdoor museum focused mainly on Schermerhorn Row, a now splendidly restored cobblestone block of 19th century shops. The addition of tall ships, most notably the S.S. Wavertree, has significantly enriched the museum’s offerings.
