It Happened Today in New York City
On April 27, 1932, poet Hart Crane either fell or jumped to his death from the deck of a ship, bound from Mexico to New York. Author of the epic poem The Bridge about the Brooklyn Bridge, Crane wrote and optimistic and glorifying view of the modern urban landscape. But the devastating reviews of the work took their toll on his self-esteem as did his struggles with his unconventional sexuality (he had just ended his only documented heterosexual affair). Whether his suicide was deliberate or not remains a question, but it was certainly fueled by alcohol either way. He was 32 years old.
