It Happened Today in New York City

On April 26, 1992, the musical Jelly’s Last Jam opened at the Virginia Theatre on Broadway, starring Gregory Hines in the title role of New Orleans jazz pioneer Jelly Roll Morton. Directed by George C. Wolfe and co-starring Savion Glover as the younger Morton, the show ran for 569 performances and won Tony Awards for Best Lighting Design, Best Featured Actress for Tonya Pinkins, and Best Leading Actor for Hines.
