It Happened Today in New York City
On April 22, 1892, on rented land on Central Park West, the West Side Tennis Club was founded, 20 years before moving to its now historic home in Forest Hills. The club would go on to host the U.S. Open 60 times between 1915 and 1977 before the event would move to Flushing Meadows. Today, the old club’s stadium is best known as a concert venue, but was the subject of an enormous preservation fight, climaxing in a failed effort to gain landmark status.
