It Happened Today in New York City
On April 18, 1942, American artist and patron Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney died, reportedly of a heart condition. She had done more than any other individual to enhance and improve the public perception of modern American artists at a time when painting and sculpture were seen to have no value unless they were old and/or European. The museum that now bears her name is a testament to her vision and values. At the time of her death, she was 67 years old.
