A Celebration of the City

Ellis Island Family History Day

Since 2001, April 17 has been officially proclaimed Ellis Island Family History Day and honors the extraordinary positive contributions of immigrants to our nation, our culture, and our world. The date was chosen because it was on this day in 1907 that the Ellis Island Immigration Processing Center had its single busiest day ever, processing just shy of 12,000 people. Of the 12-million who came through Ellis Island during the years 1892-1954, 98% were cleared to land, and only 2% were sent back. Immigrants who became eminent in their field include Isaac Asimov, Frank Capra, Charlie Chaplin, Max Factor, Felix Frankfurter, Vladimir Horowitz, Paul McKay, Pola Negri, Knute Rockne, Maria Von Trapp, and many others. Latino Broadway show-writer Lin-Manuel Miranda recently stated in his hit musical, Hamilton, “Immigrants, we get the job done.”
