It Happened Today in New York City
On April 13, 1917, businessman and financier “Diamond” Jim Brady died of a heart attack. Famed for his high-on-the-hog lifestyle, his penchant for jewels and fine clothes, and his enormous appetite, Brady is also believed to have been the first resident of New York City to own a car. Never married, Brady’s longtime romantic companion was actress Lillian Russell, whose profession represented Brady’s greatest loves, theatre and nightlife. Appropriately for such a pleasure-seeker, he was on vacation in Atlantic City at the time of his death. He was 60 years old.
