BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE — Betty Comden
Happy 100th Birthday to the late, great Betty Comden! Born Basya Cohen in Brooklyn, Comden teamed up with Adolphe Green to become one of the most successful songwriting duos in Broadway and Hollywood history. Their work with song-and-dance men such as Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly became legendary, winning Screen Writers Guild Awards for the films On the Town, The Band Wagon, and It’s Always Fair Weather. Their Broadway triumphs feature collaborations with Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne, Cy Coleman, and others, including titles such as Wonderful Town, Peter Pan, Do Re Mi, Subways Are For Sleeping, Hallelujah, Baby!, Applause, On the Twentieth Century, and Will Rogers Follies. Because they wrote romantic songs so well, many believed Comden and Green were married. They were, but not to each other; their partnership was purely artistic. In the end, it garnered them 7 Tony Awards out of 12 nominations. Ms. Comden died in 2006 at age 89.
