Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

The Top 100 Greatest NYC Buildings — #83

Long Island City Courthouse

Architect: George Hathorne
Style: Beaux Arts
Use: Legal/Government
Opened: 1876
Borough: Queens

Once the county seat, this beautiful courthouse with a fountain bubbling in front of it in its small park now houses the Civil Term of the Supreme Court, Queens County. Severely damaged by fire when it was less than 30 years old, the building was heavily restored by architect Peter M. Coto. The courthouse has been the site of many notable cases, including the inspiration for Hitchcock’s The Wrong Man, and was the site of one of the many trials of safecracker Willie Sutton, who famously answered “Why do you rob banks?” with “Because that’s where the money is.”
