03-15-escalatorOn March 15, 1892, the Reno Inclined Elevator – the world’s first escalator – was patented by mining engineer Jesse Wilford Reno. Installed four years later at the old iron pier in Coney Island, the escalator was approached as a novelty attraction, rather than a practical means of vertical transportation.
