It Happened Today in New York City
On February 24, 1942, government-funded radio show Voice of America made its first broadcast to Europe. Designed as a counterpoint to Hitler’s propaganda machine, VOA was an offshoot of earlier external news institutions. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert E. Sherwood adapted the title from the earlier “Voice from America” which had premiered on Latin American airwaves three weeks earlier. In many different media, VOA continues its international broadcasts to this day.
