Architect: Charles C. Haight
Style: French Revival
Use: Residential
Opened: 1884
Borough: Manhattan

Originally commissioned by the Astor family for the treatment of cancer, this luxurious condominium was based on the theories of Joseph Lister and Louis Pasteur, who had theorized that disease bacteria lurks in corners – hence all the round turrets where there are no corners. The limited success of the theory notwithstanding, the apartments in the round turrets are understandably the most expensive.
