02-01-astoria-railOn February 1, 1917, the Astoria Elevated Railway opened for public service. Officials who participated in the ceremonial first ride included aldermen and officers of the Public Service Commission, but not the mayor. The terminal station was named Second Avenue, as this was the name of what is now known as Ditmars Boulevard. A century later, little has changed.
