It Happened Today in New York City
On January 1, 1892, the immigration processing center at Ellis Island opened. The first immigrant processed was Annie Moore from County Cork, Ireland. By the time the center closed 62 years later 12 million people had come through. Today, one in every four Americans can trace at least one grandparent through Ellis Island. One in every three can trace some family member through Ellis Island.
