It Happened Today in New York City
On December 18, 1931, at his mistress’ apartment in Albany, Irish gangster Jack ‘Legs’ Diamond was killed by gunshot to the back of the head. He was 35 years old. Longtime associate of Arnold Rothstein and nemesis to Dutch Schultz, Diamond epitomized the “glamorous gangster” persona with his reputation for high living, good dancing, and loose women. No one was charged with his murder but it is widely believed that it may have been the local police who had seem Diamond receive one acquittal too many. He is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Maspeth, Queens.
