It Happened Today in New York City
On December 17, 1831, landowner and developer Samuel B. Ruggles deeded some old farmland to the city for the establishment of Gramercy Park. Five trustees would be in charge on ensuring that no commercial activity take place in the park and that it be used for the recreation and ornamentation of the residents in the surrounding homes. These residents’ taxes would contribute to the maintaining of the park. To this day, Gramercy Park is accessible only by privately owned keys that unlock the gate. Ruggles spoke of the importance of our open spaces, but this open space is closed to all but a few.
