It Happened Today in New York City
On December 10, 1841, the sporting journal The Spirit of the Times began publication. Intended for an upper crust readership, the periodical covered sports such as fox hunting, horse racing, rowing, and yachting, as well as theatre reviews and humor writing. Ostensibly apolitical (for fear of alienating readers), its articles occasionally hinted at being pro-Whig. Within a decade, it was the most popular sporting journal in the country.
