Saint Nicholas’ Day
While most Americans celebrate the figure of Santa Claus, the mythical gift-giving fellow adored by children, on Christmas Day, families with German roots – and strong ties thereto – will often celebrate the earlier Saint Nicholas’ Day on this, his traditional feast day. Though Germanic cultures tend to make the biggest to-do about Saint Nicholas Day, the actual Christian bishop whom they celebrate was a Greek born in what is now Turkey. When a New Yorker hears “Saint Nicholas’ Church” he will probably think of the charming little Greek Orthodox Church that was the only non-World Trade Center building to be leveled on 9/11. A new Saint Nicholas’ Church is in mid-construction at more than twice the size of the original. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, it is predicted to open sometime in 2017.
