It Happened Today in New York City

12-03-fire-pumpOn December 3, 1731, two fire engines ordered from London arrived at the Battery. The newly established fire brigades were now, thanks to inventor Richard Newsham’s hand-drawn pumpers, Engine Company 1 and Engine Company 2. They were housed at City Hall, as the first fire house would not yet be established for another five years.
