It Happened Today in New York City
On November 28, 1966, celebrated author Truman Capote hosted his famous black-and-white ball at the Plaza Hotel. Announced as a party to honor Washington Post publisher Katherine Graham, the fete was in fact a culmination of a lifelong dream Capote had harbored, but only recently had the financial means to pull off (thanks to the enormous success of his nonfiction novel In Cold Blood earlier the same year). With an exclusive guest list that featured Tallulah Bankhead, Candice Bergen, Leonard Bernstein, Richard Burton, Mia Farrow, Lillian Hellman, Harper Lee, Norman Mailer, Frank Sinatra, Andy Warhol, the ball had an advance billing as the social event of the season and earned a legacy as “the Party of the Century”.
