It Happened Today in New York City
On November 20,1966, the musical Cabaret by John Kander and Fred Ebb opened on Broadway. Based on John Van Druten’s play I Am a Camera, itself based in turn on Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin Stories, the musical depicted a erotic image of Weimar Berlin. Starring Jill Haworth, Bert Convy, Joel Grey, Jack Gilford, and Lotte Lenya, the show ran for 1,165 performances and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actor, Best Featured Actress, Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design, and Best Costume Design. It was later adapted into a legendary Academy Award-winning film.
