It Happened Today in New York City
On November 18, 1966, Elizabeth Arden died of a heart attack at Lenox Hill Hospital at age 81. Born Florence Nightingale Graham, she had worked in a pharmaceutical company for a short time before going into business for herself and establishing the cosmetics empire under her business name that would eventually make her one of the wealthiest women in the world. In the half century before her death, Arden influenced women across America to accept make-up as culturally appropriate. When before it had been associated with the image of the “painted hussy”, Arden brought skillful application of cosmetics into the mainstream as a traditional sign of elegance and sophistication.
