It Happened Today in New York City
On October 26, 1841, the first issue of The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, then bearing the more unwieldy name of Brooklyn Eagle and King’s County Democrat, was published. Famous for employing Walt Whitman as columnist and editor, The Eagle enjoyed immense popularity, ultimately having the nation’s largest circulation. Published until 1955, the newspaper was printed in a building that still stands. Now bearing the name Eagle Warehouse & Storage Company, it is now condominium apartments, selling for more than half a million dollars.
