Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
Many churches celebrate Saint Francis of Assisi on the nearest Sunday to the beginning of October. But October 4 is the actual feast day for the patron saint of animals. The Blessing of the Animals is a beloved ceremony traditionally held on the first Sunday, though some churches wait for the 4th. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine holds the most famous such ritual in New York. Pictured here is St. Francis of Assisi Church on West 31st Street, which had been the church of New York City’s most beloved Franciscan friar, Father Mychal Judge, the chaplain of the New York Fire Department, who was killed by falling debris at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
