It Happened Today in New York City
On September 11, 2001, two airplanes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center from opposite directions in what has since been declared history’s single worst terrorist attack on American soil. Within an hour of the impact, the towers which had stood for nearly 30 years would come crashing down on the surrounding neighborhood, killing nearly 3,000 people, injuring many more, and releasing dust and asbestos into the air at levels that would cause illness in further untold numbers. As news reports came in, the discovery of other crashes in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon helped reveal the incident as a coordinated attack by the terror group Al Qaeda. The subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the change in the way security is approached all over the world ushered in a change in nearly everyone’s daily routine throughout the period now known as “the post 9/11 era”.
