It Happened Today in New York City
On September 2, 1966, the Whitney Museum of American Art moved from its 54th Street home of 12 years to a new building on 75th Street and Madison Avenue. Established in Greenwich Village 35 years earlier, the Whitney remained in the peculiar modern building designed by Marcel Breuer for 49 years. Finally, after decades of wrestling with an increasing collection and limited space, the institution moved to a new venue at the foot of the High Line. The Upper East Side Building now serves as an annex to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
