It Happened Today in New York City
On August 17,1801, Physician Richard Bayley died of yellow fever he had contracted while checking a ship from Ireland that had docked in Staten Island. He was 56. Dr. Bayley had co-founded the New York Dispensary and taught anatomy at Kings College before his appointment as the first health officer of the Port of New York. Staten Island’s Bayley Seton Hospital is named after him and his daughter, Elizabeth Ann, who was became famous in her own right as the first American-born saint.
