It Happened Today in New York City
On August 5, 1966, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the construction of the new World Trade Center. After years of controversy, real estate disputes, and collaboration between the Rockefeller family and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the massive new complex began with mild fanfare. Minoru Yamasaki’s twin-tower design would go on to become an icon of the New York City skyline, despite being five times the height of anything he had built before and ten times the height of the majority of his previous designs.
