National Coast Guard Day
Every August 4 is National Coast Guard Day, honoring the birthday of what was once known as the Reserve Marine branch of the US Military, founded in 1790 by one of the great New Yorkers, Alexander Hamilton. In or above New York Harbor, the Coast Guard can be seen in blaze orange craft, protecting the “soft targets” of the city in the post 9/11 era. So, as you sail out to enjoy the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, or the city skyline, be sure to thank those who have kept you and these icons safe for 226 years. Happy National Coast Guard Day!
