It Happened Today in New York City
On July 2, 1931, pilot Wiley Post and navigator Harold Gatty received a ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes on lower Broadway in honor of their record-breaking achievement in flight around the world. Prior to Post and Gatty, the speed record for round-the-world flight was not held by an airplane at all, but by the Graf Zeppelin airship, which made the circumnavigation in 21 days. Post and Gatty set a record of 8 days, 15 hours, and 51 minutes.
