It Happened Today in New York City
On May 24, 1966, Jerry Herman’s hit musical comedy Mame, starring Angela Lansbury and Beatrice Arthur, opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre. Based on the fictional novel by Patrick Dennis (loosely inspired by his childhood with his aunt), the adventure of an eccentric New York bohemian and her impressionable nephew ran for 1,508 performances including a transfer to the Broadway Theatre in 1969. It was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and won Best Actress and Best Featured Actress for Lansbury and Arthur respectively.
