05-16 Leisler MilborneOn May 16, 1691, after leading a rebellion against the royal governor and seizing control of the city, Militia Commander Jacob Leisler, together with his son-in-law and chief advisor Jacob Milborne, were hanged for treason. Religious tensions, objections to the collection of provisional taxes, and controversy over proper royal authority, had served as catalyst to the rising that made martyrs of the two men and some of their followers.
