A Celebration of the City

It Happened Today in New York City

05-11 SlaveryOn May 11, 1741, after a fire at Fort George sparked a wave of paranoia against the city’s slave population (nearly 20% of the community) and fear of an uprising like South Carolina’s Stono Rebellion a year and a half earlier, the first of 32 black slaves was judicially murdered on suspicion of conspiracy. Within three months, 18 would be hanged and another 14 would be burned alive.
