BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE — Jane Jacobs
Happy 100th Birthday to the late, great Jane Jacobs! At a time when New Yorkers were far less in love with their history than today, Jacobs was a grassroots activist who organized communities to rise up in protest against urban planning that would remove the aesthetic heart and guts from historic neighborhoods. Her famous victory over Robert Moses (whom many had thought unbeatable) in obtaining the cancellation of his plan for a Lower Manhattan Expressway, which would have destroyed Greenwich Village, Soho, Little Italy, and Chinatown, is acknowledged as one of the greatest wins for urban activism in the 20th century. Her book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, is one of the most influential works on city planning ever written.
