It Happened Today in New York City
On February 20, 1891, the Metropolitan Club held its first meeting. 25 elite gentlemen from the upper echelons of New York financial and civic circles, established the club as an elaborate game of one-upmanship against other high society clubs that had denied them membership. The elegant Stanford White building literally, physically turns its shoulder on Fifth Avenue – where many of the other clubs were located at the time, and where some still are – placing its entrance on the cross street, rather than the avenue itself. The club’s first president, and one of its most influential creators, was J. Pierpont Morgan.
