It Happened Today in New York City
On December 14, 1715, Thomas Dongan, 2nd Earl of Limerick, 5th Colonial Governor of New York, died at the age of 81. While in office in 1683, he had convened the first representative legislature of New York. The first Irish Catholic to govern New York, his term was the only time during the Dutch or English colonial period that the Catholic Church was permitted to function in New York. He continued his governorship until 1688, and then departed for London, where he died 27 years later.
