Top 20 Greatest NYC TV Shows — #1
NYPD Blue (1993 – 2005)
After years of star-driven glam mysteries, TV needed an edgy, explicit, envelope-pushing show about our edgy, explicit, envelope-pushing city. The show that answered the call changed our understanding of what network television could be. With frank, blunt language, nudity, and honest depictions of alcoholism, bigotry, and other faults, NYPD Blue was a breath of fresh air for increasingly sophisticated audiences who wanted intelligence and a hard edge. Without a major star to draw viewers, the show survived 12 seasons on the strength of its grit and sincerity, ultimately winning 9 Emmy Awards. The handheld camera, enhancing the perspective of the cops, was only one aspect that raised this show above other police procedurals that precede and follow it. The actors’ accents, the grubby set design, the recognizable-yet-obscure locations all contributed to an authenticity that has yet to be equaled in a drama about New York’s finest.
