Beautiful New York

A Celebration of the City

Top 20 Greatest NYC TV Shows — #2

Taxi (1978 – 1983)

12-04 Taxi

One of the funniest comedies ever televised begins with the marriage of two New York City icons: a yellow cab rolling gracefully across the Queensboro Bridge. This hilarious ensemble piece about the lives of a fleet of cabbies provided some of the greatest roles to intrepid stage and screen actors, Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito, Tony Danza, and others. Though the unsavory dispatcher and his lead driver see transportation as a profession, each other cabbie has other interests, such as art, acting, boxing, college, 60’s hippie culture, etc. The garage is simply the means to an end for most of them. The balance between the day job and the dream is a recurring theme of the show. Many New Yorkers will recognize themselves in that balance.
