Considered the inventor of the sitcom, Gertrude Berg’s domestic comedy aired on radio for two decades before arriving on television. Speaking in a thick Yiddish accent, the beloved character of Mrs. Goldberg is the ultimate embodiment of the well-meaning neighborhood busybody. The woman with “a place in every heart and a finger in every pie” knows all her neighbors and holds little gossip sessions at the apartment window. Moving upward from the tenements to the Bronx, Mrs. Goldberg always seeks to do right by her family and her oh-so-close neighbors. Long before block parties or tenants’ associations, there was Mrs. Goldberg.
