It Happened Today in New York City
On November 25, 1700, Stephanus Van Cortlandt, the first native-born mayor of New York City, died at the age of 57. By the time of his death, his massive landholdings comprised over 87,000 acres along the Hudson River, a small percentage of which is now Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. A larger portion is now Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson.
