International Day of the Girl
Since the United Nations declared October 11 International Day of the Girl in 2011, the annual worldwide observance has focused on such issues as child marriage, education, and domestic violence. Here, in the international city of New York, many girls who hoped to rise to the top (often in positions traditionally held by men) have done so and deserve to be celebrated on this day and every day. Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, Nellie Bly, Peggy Guggenheim, Emily Roebling, Beverly Sills, Diana Vreeland, Madame C.J. Walker, Victoria Woodhull, Sylvia Woods, and many more came before this holiday. The focus of the International Day of the Girl will help to ensure that there will be ever so many more after them.
